Usage of OSM data in disaster relief field works

This hackpad is to collect usage cases of relief teams in disaster field works.

Relief Team

Tzu Chi

• Use OSM to indicate the current place of TzuChi relief team for people on the web. OSM data is part of Tzu Chi’s toolkit for discussion and planning relief works.

• This is not exactly how Tzu Chi works. Have you ever seen Tzu Chi’s team on web? We even don’t have GPS tracker with us. Tzu Chi may use OSM to print out maps for discussion, but that is all. It is the same as other aid teams.
• Tzu Chi basically leverage local people as guide. Map is not so important, at least in Nepal.

• As I have described, OSM data is not used as relief work, at least during my time in Nepal mission.
• Then can you write a version more accurate in your opinion?  Like I said, this is a wiki, feel free to correct it if you have more info.

• We relied on local key persons telling us the places to offer relief service and the shuttle driver took care of everything. We did not use GPS there.

KLL (Kathmandu Living Labs)

• KLL received printed map using OSM as primary layer from the Department of National Defence, Canada. http://kathmandulivinglabs.org/blog/nepal-earthquake-report-from-kll-situation-room-day-10-may-5/

• We have also heard requests from the HOT community for images and 
• documentation about how the maps are actually making an impact on the 
• ground; we have been relaying those requests to the organizations in the
•  field. If you are someone that is using maps in the field, send us 
• pictures or a few sentences about what you are doing so more volunteers 
• are inspired to map Nepal even better!

• (According to Nama Budhathoki at SotM TW 2015) The military used OpenStreetMap data to identify locations and sizes of IDP camp, so that they can monitor and bring supplies to them.  The military needs update-to-date information about this, and they were demanding new info every week.
